What do you mean by "save changes in the hdd"? I have to admit I don't understand what you are refering to.
Can you explain what you were able to do in Virtual PC that you want to reproduce here?

Re: virtualbox how to not save changes in hd automatically
oh yeah, sorry...
like, im a developer, and im doin several tests with my aplication, in diff OS´...
I like to, for example, install my app in the Virtual Box VM, but, when I close my session, i dont wanna the changes to be saved automatically, so i can install my app again and test all over again, whenever i want...
virtual pc does that, but it doesnt support windows 8... funny, cuz it s a microsoft product that doesnt support its own product! I know i know they have discontinued the VIrtual pc... but, still funny heheh

Re: virtualbox how to not save changes in hd automatically
Use your VirtualBox main manager. Click file then virtual Media manager. Under the HDD find your guest VDI and the click modify. There you will find the setting you are looking for.
Note: guest needs to be shut down (not saved state) and I would think a backup would be in order.
You can also do this with VBoxManage and this is explained in your VirtualBox users manual.

No it won't ask you, it will simply throw away any changes made since you turned the disk to immutable.

Switch back to standard. You can not save any changes until you switch back, so it is a one off until you reboot.

Nope.
You can take a {{cringe}} snap shot but that just sets you up for a failure should you have problems.
