Using Core i3 but box sees only 1

Hello there!

I have enabled my Virtualization in BIOS setup.

I am using HP Pavilion G6 Core i3 (Intel® Core™ i3-2350M Processor (3M Cache, 2.30 GHz)) laptop with 8GB of internal memory and I cannot adjust the processor.
Image

Now the guest is like running at 700mhz and it is extremely extremely slow :( AND IT'S WASTING A LOT OF MY TIME
Image

Why can't I adjust the processor were I already enabled Virtualization in my BIOS? Is this some sort of a bug? :|

Thanks,
Jayson :|

Code: Select all

00:00:07.290502 HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_NO_VMX
VirtualBox can not see the VMX flag. Assuming that you have enabled it in bios then something else has taken control of VT-x.
I see Windows 8 is the Host and it more than likely has Hyper-v. MS takes great pride in taking total control of your PC from you and you need to disable Hyper-v at boot or remove it.

Probably because I have Visual Studio 2012 and Windows 8, Windows Phone 7, 7.1, and 8 SDKs installed? WP8 needs Hyper-V support

do you know any workarounds?

Tell it to not start at boot. Other than that you can only run 32 bit guests in VirtualBox, and most will be slow.

Sorry perryg. I don't want to be a pain, but he quite obviously hasn't activated all his processors...

His Screenshot of the Task Manager proves it. (Mine shows the two processors) :

Maybe I'm right and maybe I'm wrong...

If you have more than one VMX aware hypervisor (or if something else takes control of VMX) then the first one running is the one that has total control over it. Hyper-V starts at boot even if you do not intend to use it. That stops any other virtualizer from using VMX. Which is causing this issue.

Oh and just to be complete here, if you can not assign any more than one processor in the VBox guest settings, you will not have any more than one processor available to the guest.

If you only have two processors there is really no point in allocating more than one to the vm. You still need CPU power to run the host OS.

In fact there is very little point in allocating more than one CPU to a guest no matter how many you have, unless that guest really needs it and the application it is running can take advantage of multiple CPUs. Many applications run slower in the guest if you allocate multiple CPUs. You will find many reports of this happening in these (and of other virtualisers) forums.

BillG, I totally agree with you. I'm was just pointing out that in order to give 1 processor to the Guest and keep 1 for the Host you had to activate both of them through msconfig so that you have one spare to give in the first place....
