Can't run one of my VMs after upgrading and restoring

First off I am using the Virtualbox GUI version 4.2.6 r82870 on a laptop running Windows 8, 64 bit (English).

I am having trouble with a vitual machine running Windows 7 Japanese edition (actually, two of them, but I figure I should handle one thing at a time, and for some reason the vdi file for that one seems to be outright missing- even from the windows easy transfer backup file, so... yeah..).

Long story short, I was running Windows 7 64 bit (English) on my laptop, and I wanted to upgrade to Windows 8 (also 64 bit, also English ofc). After having upgraded on my pc and having no end of trouble, I decided to opt for the "upgrade without saving my settings or files" method for my laptop and things worked much better....

Prior to the upgrade I backed things up with windows easy transfer, and after the upgrade I restored everything with windows easy transfer. So far so good, except that two of my three virtual machines won't start up now. As far as the VM in question is concerned:

Going to a command prompt and typing vboxmanage showvminfo "sephchan" just gives me an error:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage.exe: error: Could not find a registered machine named 'sephchan'
VBoxManage.exe: error: Details: code VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80bb0001), compo
nent VirtualBox, interface IVirtualBox, callee IUnknown
VBoxManage.exe: error: Context: "FindMachine(Bstr(VMNameOrUuid).raw(), machine.a
sOutParam())" at line 2495 of file VBoxManageInfo.cpp
The error I get when I try to run the VM is this:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Sephchan.

The VM session was closed before any attempt to power it on.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: SessionMachine
Interface: ISession {12f4dcdb-12b2-4ec1-b7cd-ddd9f6c5bf4d}
if theres any information missing from this post I apologize, I did look at the FAQ and I did do some forum searches but the solutions I found did not seem to work for me, and in any event those problems do not seem quite the same.

The machine name is case sensitive, so maybe you get more information from
vboxmanage showvminfo "Sephchan"

Well that's interesting. I solved my problem by cloning the vm. The original still won't work but the clone will.

Any ideas on why that is?

The most common reason IMHO is upgrading/changing the VirtualBox software while a VM is hibernated. Cloning doesn't preserve the hibernation file, or "Discard saved state" would have worked as well.
