Ubuntu 12.04 Guest only running in low-graphics mode

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a virtual machine. Windows 7 as host.
After installation and reboot Ubuntu only starts up in low-graphics mode. It says:
The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
Any idea how i could fix this?

Install the guest additions (in the guest). See Chapter 4 in your VirtualBox users guide.

Okay, that did the job.
But i had to mount the cdrom manually in the terminal to gain access to the install script.

I wonder if this is the same problem I am seeing. What kernel are you running?
I just discovered that the new 12.04.2 LTS point releases for Ubuntu, Edubuntu, and Mythbuntu come with the 3.5 kernel by default instead of the previous 3.2 kernel that originally shipped with 12.04 Precise. When 12.04.3 comes out, other Ubuntu variants may also default to 3.5.
In Virtualbox, I get the same low-graphics mode problem with the 3.5 kernel, but I'm OK with the original 3.2 kernel.
In VMware player, I also get problems when upgrading to the 3.5 kernel. It gets further, the desktop still boots, but the window decorations are messed up so you can't move a window because the title bar is missing.
See here for more info if this sounds like your problem:
wiki. ubuntu. com /Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
(Sorry about the goofy URLs, the system won't let me post them on my first post.)
They suggest that if you are running in a virtual machine, you remain on the 3.2 kernel. You may want to reinstall with the 12.04.1 install images/media. You can then upgrade to 12.04.2, but it will leave the kernel at 3.2.

I don't have an issue running Ubuntu 12.04.2 on the latest release of VBox 4.2.6, in regards to low graphics. There is an issue with animation like 3D gears but that is fixed in the latest from SVN ( should be out in the next maintenance release )
