I don't know how to describe this problem. I have a windows 7 host and virtualbox 4.1.4 and installed a fedora 64 bit as guest os.

Windows network connection is fine, however when I want to download a file from the guest I see that not only the network utilization is low, but also the speed varies a lot and there are many disconnects. As I said the network connection on windows has not problem.

This is not the first time I see this problem. I had this problem with virtualbox4. It has not been fixed in 4.1 and I think it exists on 4.2.

Just to show you the problem, please see the picture.

It is really hard to download a 2MB file

Testing FTP from an off site server is no indication of local issues. Try network transfer between host and guest.
Also switch to the VirtIO network adapter to see if you get better transfer speeds.

I transfer data all day with VirtualBox guests and don't see any real issues.

Try network transfer between host and guest.
How?
Also switch to the VirtIO network adapter to see if you get better transfer speeds.
If you mean "Attached to" section in network settings, then I can not see that. Where is that setting?

See the image below. Note that this will be seen as a NIC change by the guest.

Thanks.
And how can I check the host<->guest transfer?
