Guest Additions won't mount

I just installed Win 7 on my iMac (i5 from 2011) and wanted to install guest additions. When I went to the devices menu and chose to install guest additions the application froze.
It seems like every time I try to do anything with the virtual CD drive, it hangs -- spinning wheel, not responding. I left it overnight and it did not resolve itself.

Any ideas of how to resolve this?

Thanks for your response.
I am using version 4.2.6 R82870 with 2048 MB allocated to the VM out of 8 GB on the system.

Where did this Win7 VM come from? E.g. I see that the hard disk format is "hdd", which is an unusual choice for a VirtualBox VM. Migrated from Parallels?

I tried virtualbox a couple of years ago and it was not stable enough for me, but I hate how often Parallels and Fusion break due to OS upgrades and require a new license purchase. So, I wanted to try virtualbox again when setting up a new machine. But, since my confidence in it was not that great, I wanted to save myself work by setting it up in a format that could be used by another VM. Looks like that time saving thing didn't work out :)

The selection of "hdd" format by itself should not be a problem, except insofar as the feature has not been well tested - judging from feedback around here. I was trying to establish if this hdd file was actually created in Parallels, because in that case all bets are off. Who knows what funny Parallels-specific disk drivers might have been installed?

I see where you were going with that. To be clear, this is a hdd file set up fresh by VirtualBox -- only installed windows, AV software and Office 2013 - and has not been used with any other virtualization software.

What AV software? Try with it disabled.

It's Avast's free home edition antivirus. Will try without it when I get home.

I also have the OS log report from the force quit I did if anyone thinks that might be helpful.

I think I'm to giving up on this again, unless anyone can shed some light on this. I went to turn off the AV and notice windows had some updates to do, so tried to run software update and it wouldn't download anything. Tried again and it started working. Walked away from the computer and came back to a paused VM that won't unpause -- spinning wheel and and application not responding. This is every time I run the thing

Tried with AV off - same result.
