Win8: Terminated unexpectedly, exit code 1, NS_ERROR_FAILURE

Yesterday, I had a fully functioning installation of a Windows 8 guest running on my Mac OS X 10.7.5 host. I'm using VirtualBox 4.2.6 r82870. Today, I try to start the machine and it gives me an error message:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win8.

The virtual machine 'Win8' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.

Details:

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858}
Then:

Code: Select all

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully.
The only changes that took place between then and now were:
1. I installed two Apple software updates, one of which was a fix relating to the SMC. I am now on build 11G63
2. The computer then restarted, was extremely slow for a while, and finally crashed, and would not start up again for ages no matter what I tried. I had to leave it overnight before it would start working

Can anyone help? I couldn't really find anything on the forums but apologize if this is a common problem. I hope I don't have to start again from scratch!

Michael

This message usually pops up when some software update has munged the permissions. Try running Disk Utility and doing a Repair Disk Permissions. If it still doesn't work then try re-installing VB. Use the Uninstall Tool that came with the VB install package to uninstall the application and the drivers before doing the re-install.

Thanks so much for the advice. The permission fixing didn't help, but uninstalling (using the tool) and reinstalling worked wonderfully. :D
