win 2008r not connecting in virtualbox

Post by Jvirk »

Hi,
I am new bee in this technical stuff. I have installed virtualbox on my computer and then installed the pfsense. Run my pfsense and it is showing DHCP and IP address -- which i persumed it is working. IP address is 10.0.10.1
I have also installed Window server 2008R and given the static ip address 10.0.10.5 and gateway address is 10.0.10.1 (same as the ip of pfsense) but it is not connected. I am getting ! sign on my network right bottom of screen.
Please help me. Thanks in advance.

You are using the NAT mode, which will not work for what I think you are trying to do.
If you are trying to setup pfSense as a firewall for your Win2k8 box, and have some stuff running on the win2k8 box, you need to:
- Give 2 NICs to the pfSense, one Internal, one host-only or bridged (depending on your LAN)
- Give 1 internal NIC to the Win2K8
Both internal NIC must be on the same named network

You give very limited information on what you want to do exactly, and what you have host and hardware wise. More information could be useful to give you a proper and good answer.

Hi thanks for the reply.
These following are my settings in pfsense

pfsense (Adapter) --Bridged Adapter
name — IntelR Centrino® Wireless-N 1030 (name of my computer adapter

2nd tab (Adapter 2) — Host Only Adapter
name — VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter

Under Window Server 2008 — setting are
Adapter 1 — Host-only Adapter
Name — VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter

I have given static ip address to the win2008r.

You still have to answer this.

All you are telling me is what you have and how you want to do something, which doesn't work.
We must know what the something is before we can help you.

Sorry I am very new to this technical stuff. I am doing MCITP course, where I need to set up two vm (winsever2008r) in Virtualbox and both vms need to be on the same network talking to each other. Also they need to talk to Pfsense as gateway to the outside world

I have installed virtualbox on my laptop

I have installed PFsense in that virtualbox and done the following which enable me to ping google yahoo etc

pfsense (Adapter) --Bridged Adapter
name — IntelR Centrino® Wireless-N 1030 (name of my computer adapter

2nd tab (Adapter 2) — Host Only Adapter
name — VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter

But when I have given static IP address to one of the vm which got winsevr2008r, it showing excalmation mark in yellow colour and not connecting to the internal as well as outside network

Under Window Server 2008 — setting are
Adapter 1 — Host-only Adapter
Name — VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter

Hardware wise I have this laptop with IntelR Centrino® Wireless-N 1030 and Virtualbox which have pfsense as gateway and winserve2008r

Set Internal network for pfSense adapter 2 and Win2008 adapter 1
Then assign the static IPs that you want.

Did as advised. Pfsense shows the DHCP and IP and can ping external network but the Winserver shows the following 'No Internet connection'. there is a '!' mark on the network connection icon.
Please advise here how to fix this.
Many thanks

I am afraid this is getting very much out of scope of this forum.
From a Virtualbox point of view, you did everything right, now the rest is actually knowing and understanding networking.
What's left is the Guest OS configuration, which you should know how to do...

I would suggest to seek help on Networking forums.
