How Back Up VM built on Bootcamp?

Post by autnagrag »

My first post, this. Setup is as per signature, below.

The VM works well, and has been exhaustively updated. It's virtual HD passed the Windows command line

Code: Select all

:>chkdsk /b
, as did the Bootcamp partition.

I have read the documentation for Virtual Box.
I have searched here.
I know how to, and have already performed a, back up of the Bootcamp partition using Winclone 3.7.

What I don't know how to do, and want to do, is back up the virtual machine. I must be bad at searching, because I can't imagine I'm the only one who wants to do this. I know this sort of set up is not rare, because there is a tutorial in these forums about it (Win7 guest on OS X host, guest VM built on Bootcamp installation).

I'm getting an error when I try to use VirtualBox>File>Export -- and I'm not even sure that's the right way to back up.

Suggestions welcome.

Host hardware: MacBook Pro 7,1 (late spring 2010) Host OS: OS X 10.8.2
VirtualBox v. 4.2.6 r82870 Guest OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, w/ SP1, exhaustively updated.

Details: There is a Bootcamp partition that boots cleanly into Win7. The VM is built on this installation of Win7.
The Bootcamp partition is on a different physical drive than the OS X boot volume (the optical drive was removed and replaced with a large hard drive; the stock boot hard drive was replaced with an Intel SSD).

To backup the machine, simply copy the Virtual Machine folder to the backup location, when the VM is powered off completely.
Simple as that.
