Re: question about XP guest install partition
There's no need to go to Virtual Media Manager - the Devices menu on the VM has an entry which allows you to "change disks" in the virtual CD drive, or set it to empty.

Re: question about XP guest install partition
Well I have made good progress and tested some windows applications like office and adobe CS5 and they all seem to work well. I have also done some compiling from my shared folder and that has also worked.
I have going back to trying to create a more trimmed down version of windows and have a version working. The only issue I seem to be having is that I lose the mouse pointer when I go to scale mode. I wasn't having this problem before, so I'm not sure what is going on or what to do about it. Scale mode seems to be the best way to look at the VM window, so I would like to get that working if possible.
Also, are there instructions for how to access files off of a CD drive. I can't seem to get rid of guest additions as the contents of the optical drive. I have gone to the virtual media manager and released guest additions from the list of optical drives. I have also tried removing it from the list of drives. Guest additions still appears in windows explorer as what is in the optical drive. Under the storage settings, if I select the optical drive, the option to change what it is pointed to is still greyed out, so I can't tell it to look at the optical drive on the system.
Any suggestions?

Re: question about XP guest install partition
For your first question, bear in mind what I said earlier about our ability to support non-standard distros. Basically, if you can't demonstrate a problem with a standard (supported) distro then we will not be interested in discussing it.
For your CD question, see my comment above. On what you said about the CD drive contents still being visible after removing the drive: I suspect that at some point you added a second CD drive and are now manipulating the wrong drive. There is nothing magical about VMs: virtual or not, the guest OS can't continue using a piece of hardware after you've removed it from the PC.
