Hi,

I hope you can help me. I am new to virtual box before this and new to linux.
I currently have a HP Pavilion dv7-6135dx laptop which has win 7 home premium 64-bit. It has at least 60 gig free. I have been trying to install Oracle Linux 5 (updates 2,5,7 and 9 all 64-bit) and each one has failed for one reason or another. Could some program on my system be causung the issue?

1. When trying to load I get a write error.
2. When I finally get one to finally load and they may have earlier had a write error they would get a kernal panic after installing guest additions ( i think I installed everything before the guest additions unless they were supposed to installed in some order) and would not be able to boot.

So I am thinking maybe I should get a new PC built and if I were to do that what do you think I should have done. If you really think getting a new PC would not solve the problem I would open another thread and maybe someone could help me.

You have not provided enough information to diagnose any errors. You haven't even said what the error message is, and in addition to that we normally require supporting data such as VM log files. Please pick one issue and then read Minimum information needed for assistance.

I can tell you that 60GB is probably pretty tight for running a 64bit guest OS, and that's assuming you want the guest to use all of it, leaving nothing for the host OS.

PC advice: A new desktop PC would have a modern multicore processor which supports VT-x. I would suggest Win7 as a more proven host OS than Win8. The PC would have plenty of RAM (4GB if the host OS is 32bit, at least 8GB with a 64bit host OS). A decent sized system disk, and a separate 1TB or 2TB drive for holding large data files - such as VMs. Make sure the front side bus (FSB) speed of the PC is as high as you can afford, as RAM speed is far more critical to performance than CPU speed.
