I am wanting to use a session of ubuntu to host my web page

Post by Bean »

I have LAMP installed on ubuntu... I am a "newbie". The white paper I am using says to change the "bind-address = 127.0.0.1" in the MySQL my.cnf file to my IP address... what would "my" IP address be?

ifconfig -a will show you your IP address.

ok... but... is this talking about my modem IP? my Host IP? my Guest IP (If there is one)? If someone is trying to reach my modem IP to access the server, I use a dunamic DNS service that follows my dynamic IP and allowed me to choose a domain address for it... I am sooo confused...

Your guest IP is what you have showing for eth0. Since you are using NAT can I assume you do not have a router in your LAN?

Then I would switch to using bridged mode for the network adaptor.

Virtualbox originally setup a bridge. But my host could no longer connect... so I eliminate the bridge...

ok... deleted the host bridge setup by VB. Went into VM setup and bridged to correct adapter and manually setup IP for ubuntu.... Do I use the guest (Ubuntu) IP or the host IP for the MySQL setup?

If the bridge is working you should have a unique address in the guest that is in the same subnet as the host and router.
I would use the guest IP since this is the one hosting the LAMP, unless you have the SQL installed in the host. In any case once you have a reliable bridged connection VirtualBox has done its part and everything else is user defined and outside the scope of this forum.

It did not have a unique IP, so I went ahead and entered one manually. I will give it a trial run tomorrow...
