Can't connect usb devices on vb 4.2.6

Hallo
I wonder if someone can help me to solve my problem.
I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 on virtualbox 4.2.6 on a windows 7 host and all attempts to connect a usb device to the VM have failed.
I've installed the Guest Additions on Ubuntu and the Extension Pack on VirtualBox but still after I try to connect any device such as external hard drive, memory card or pendrive I can't see it on the guest O.S. or receive an error message from the VM.
