Virtual Box Networking

Post by Aaron (student) »

I am using an 802.11n Wireless LAN Card installed in the computer which connects to a wireless router. I am in a class where I have to use Virtual Box for assignments and it needs to be able to connect to a network/internet. I have tried many ranges of settings to get the network to connect but nothing seems to work.

After reading some suggestions I am using a setup with Adapter 1 set to NAT with type: PCnet-FAST III and no cable connected. Adapter 2 is set to Bridged Adapter using the correct Wireless LAN card and the same type. Promiscuous mode is set to allow all for both; they each have seperate MAC Addresses and no cable connected.

The strange thing is that when I start up the virtual machine the bridged adapter no longer uses the card I selected and chooses to attempt to use Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller and says that no driver is installed for it.

I have also tried using just NAT with adapter 1 to no success and have created a bridged network on the host computer and attempted to have VM use that but it is not found even though it is selected.

First thing to understand is while the host may be using the wireless card the guest will use a Ethernet connection. You can bridge this to the WLAN or you can simply use NAT.

The upside of NAT is it will just work (if you don't change the default settings) but the downside is that you can not access the guest directly from the host.
You would need to port forward if you have a service that is needed to be reached.

Bridged works for the local LAN and the Internet but you need a router in the LAN.

If you have no router use NAT for the Internet and add a host-only adapter to access the guest.

Read Chapter 6 in your VirtualBox users manual.

Note: If you are going to need further assistance you need to provide more information, such as exact host & guest, plus exactly what you outcome needs to be.

just using NAT has the same problem. Network detects no networks and clicking troubleshoot reveals that no driver is installed and randomly during startup it will give an error that a driver was installed incorrectly (but not every time).

I am running Virtual box to boot Windows Server 2008 R2 on the host computer which is an HP Windows 7 64 bit.

I tried to set the ip address in the command prompt within virtualbox to the same as the host computer and it stated "Element not found"

The step I am on in my class requires me to check network connections and TCP/IP settings and configure a static ip address.

Well you are not going to do static with VBox NAT.

You say this is for school? Then I would guess this has to do with networking and domains.

This gets really tricky on a home LAN. If you don't set it up right to begin with it can mess up your local LAN.

Does the server need to get to the Internet, and are you going to be setting up a domain?
If so then you might want to see this:
The easiest and for most the best way to use and test Windows domains in VirtualBox

I am basically trying to emulate a DHCP server. I have read in a couple places that wireless cards may not be usable in VirtualBox and that a usb adapter is required. I unfortunately do not have any money to buy one and do not have a non Windows 7 operating system to run the software the school wanted me to use.

Then follow the link I sent you. If you are on wireless on your local LAN then you already have a DHCP server. Adding another will make things go crazy.

Using the Internal mode isolates this from the local LAN. Then you can install another guest and set it to use Internal and that guest will get its lease from the DHCP server on the isolated LAN.

Tried setting up an internal network like stated. But the same problem exists. No connection found and no network device detected.

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

You have selected AMD PCNet PCI II (Am79C970A) which will not work in Windows 2008
You should use Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)

Also you have the cable disconnected and that means that nothing will communicate.

The last two changes you suggested finally did get the program to work correctly. Thank you very much.
