need help with network settings please..

hello all..
I am new to virtual box.
On my host PC I manually configure my I.P settings..
I use the D-LINK router with TALKTALK. I disable DHCP and set my network adapter manually..
my settings are
i.p 192.168.1.69
sub net 255.255.255.0
def gateway 192.168.1.1
dns
8.8.8.8
4.2.2.4
I want to be able to connect to the internet from my guest XP pro installation.
I think the virtualbox default settings are for "automatic IP config" and this will not work...
my "NETWORK" adapter 1 setting in my guest xp pro is set to NAT / adapter type intel pro/1000 mt desktop, which should be OK if I understand correctly..
another virtualbox adapter will appear in my network settings with
ip 192.168.65.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
def gateway blank
dns
1) blank
2) blank
I have tried setting the default gateway to 192.168.1.1, the same as my host adapter but it throws up a warning and will not connect.. some thing like you can't have the same gateway on separate networks.. don't quote me on that... but along those lines..
Could someone possibly help at all.
One other thing is when starting the virtual machine, to get from the logon to the desktop takes an absolute eternity.. 15-20mins???
this is with win 8 and i5 3550 with virtualisation turned on in the bios and VT-x..
Once you eventually get to the desk top, it is really quick.. it's just getting there??
Any advice on this also please...
thank you..
