Use multiple copies of VMDKs?

Post by ohaya »

Hi,

I have a number of test configurations under VMware Workstation, with a mix of Windows and Centos guests.

When using VMware Workstation, I have a set of VMDKs for a Centos guest and another set of VMDKs for a Windows 2000 Server guest, and when I need a new guest, I just copy the VMDKs (e.g., using Windows file copy) and then create a new guest, and point to the copied VMDKs.

With VBox, it looks like in the media manager, it keeps track of some kind of UUID in the VMDKs, and it won't allow me to add a copied VMDK if the (for example) original VMDK is already in the media manager.

I know that VBox has a clone function, but I have my guest VMDKs on an SSD, and for some reason the clone function is hanging when it gets through part of the file copies (Windows file copy seems to work).

So, is there a way to edit the copied VMDKs so that VBox would treat the copied VMDKs as different from the original VMDKs?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

I just found this:

viewtopic.php?p=33678

but although the question was about VMDKs, the answers look like they're for VDIs. Will these same commands work for VMDKs?

Thanks,
Jim
