Hi

I have been trying to run a piece of software that needs to be authenticated over a VPN.

I am running a Win7 64x host and a Ubuntu 12.10 guest.

I have searched all the forums and cannot get either bridged mode or Host-adapter mode to work.

Has anyone got any simple guides on how to get a PPTP VPN working?

If "host adapter" refers to "Host-Only mode" then, as the name implies, that has no external connection and can only be used to talk to the host. You have not made clear what you want to connect to what, using VPN.

Lets step back a bit. Does bridged networking work for the purpose of internet browsing from the guest?

* Looking at the forums Virtualbox doesn't seem to be able to do this via a NAT interface
* Thus I tried to set up a second interface (eth1) as a host-only adapter, setting its IP address in ubuntu to 1 greater than the IP of the host Virtualbox adapter

* I then tried to set up bridged networking by selecting this option for the 1st interface in Virtualbox, clearing the ubuntu network config and restarting - this didn't work either as I couldn't browse the internet.

The fact that you have been adding and removing NICs has possibly confused the Linux guest. Unfortunately I'm not a Linux user, someone else will have to help you with that.

For bridged networking to work you need a wired or wireless NIC to bridge to, and there needs to be a router or other DHCP server on the other end to farm out local IP addresses, or else you would need to know how to configure a static IP address as assigned by your internet service provider.

Like I said, we are stepping back a bit - forget VPN for now and concentrate on why bridged networking isn't working - most people find it very easy to get working.

Reset the Linux network.
edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules or you can delete the rules and Linux will configure it on the next boot

Oh and you should have the proper plugin for PPTP.
