Cant install Guest Additions

Post by Anointed1 »

Hi,

I am new to VB and Linux. I am running host Win7 and VB 4.2.6 r82870. The guest is Ubuntu 12.04.

To summarise I seem to be in a perpetual loop, in that I can't update or install packages. I can't get the wireless adapter in Host
to give me online access in the Guest. Therefore, I need Guest Additions, but I can't get online access, as I don't have the packages
to login to my wireless adapter. I can't create a shared folder for the same reason. I can't begin to install Guest Additions as I can't get online to get the packages... and so it goes on.

How do people usually go about it? To have online access and be able to update packages?

I have attempted to mount the GA ISO by downloading in Win7 and creating the CD/DVD image, but that comes back with an error.

Thanks!

You need to first fix the network in the guest. You don't need the guest additions for that to work.

Post the following as an attachment:
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Further to my original post.
I have been able to see the wireless interface wlan0
Which I set to static ip in the interfaces file.

I could ping it, view SSID & see all details.
I think the point of contention was the WPA login credentials.

I have read only WEP is supported and WPA can't be used
From interfaces file, suggesting should be edited in wpa_supplicant.

However, I have managed to access online via Putty SSH.
So if I can configure wpa_supplicant with wlan0 credentials then all should be ok.

If I have to download dkms package I can now do it via Putty.

Therefore, I am happy for you to close this thread.

Thank you for your consideration.
