still missing Hd space
still missing Hd space
Hi
After running the uninstall script and removing the virtualbox folder in /Users/"username"/Library , Im still missing the hard drive space that I allocated for virtualbox.
When running omnidisksweeper it tells me that there is 105 GB of files on my disk, but the system tells me I only got 35 GB free on a 250 GB hard drive, the 100 GB that I used for virtual box is still being held hostage some how!!!
Does anybody know how to free them??
Mac os 10.8.2, was running VirtualBox 4.2.6

Re: still missing Hd space
By removing the folder do you mean moving it to the trash? If so, did you remember to empty the trash after you did that?

Your issue is apparently the same as this one.

Yes have emptied the trash and restarted the machine a couple of times.
Re: still missing Hd space
yes they do seem to be similar, I have all files visible and have removed everything related to VirtualBox, the fact that Omnidisksweeper cant see anything related to the 100 GB that the system is missing is weird.

Re: still missing Hd space
I assume people know when OSX 10.8 is installed it creates an invisible recovery partition which would take up quite a lot of space. I also assume people aren't creating a separate partition to create VMs in, then not deleting the partition.

Your assumptions are correct in my case. this issue is entirely related to VirtualBox.

Re: still missing Hd space
I really don't see how that's possible. I've had VirtualBox on three different iMacs since "VB 2.something" and I've never had it take up free space. You could download GrandPerspective which is free and will show in a graphic way the files on your drive and it would be very apparent if there were any huge files on the drive.olle wrote:loukingjr wrote:I assume people know when OSX 10.8 is installed it creates an invisible recovery partition which would take up quite a lot of space. Re: still missing Hd space
I used OmniDiskSweeper that does the same thing i guess, i tells me that there are 105 gb of files, the biggest chunk being 55 Gb of user files ( my documents ). finder ( using cmd -i ) tells me that used: 205 GB.
I did create a virtual disk of 100 GB, but after removing all files related to Virtualbox, including running uninstall script and deleting the virtualBox folder in: /Users/"user"/Library
there is still 100 GB thats not being available to the system.
Just as you say I cant see how that is possible either, and yes I have emptied the trash and restarted the machine.

Re: still missing Hd space
running GrandPerspective gives me the following numbers
volume size 232 GB
Size of scanned files 102 GB
Miscellaneous used space 99.2 GB ( this is where the problem is, how do I get this back)
Initial free space 31.1 GB

Re: still missing Hd space
Can't you see the list of files or navigate the directory of this "Miscellaneous used space"?
It awefully looks to me like some recovery or snapshot system of the OSX system - if there is such a thing.
I am not using OSX so I would'nt know better, but what about something like Timeline?

Re: still missing Hd space
The system recovery is on a separate partition, I can see that fine.
This all happened during a couple of hours yesterday ( installing VB creating a 100 GB .vdi and then uninstalling and removing the .vdi ), so I know for sure it´s because of some conflict between mac os 10.8 and virtual box.

Re: still missing Hd space
unless you created a 100GB "fixed" disk in virtualbox the size of the .vdi would be less than 10GB even if you installed a guest into it. I have 15 guests currently installed and they take a total of less than 91.3GB. I currently have OSX 10.8.2 running with VB 4.2.6 and since there doesn't seem to be anyone else running into this problem I seriously doubt it's a OSX/VirtualBox conflict. Try running Repair Disk from Disk Utility on the drive.olle wrote:The system recovery is on a separate partition, I can see that fine.

Then I am not sure something can be done from here... Unless you can actually see what's inside (somehow)!olle wrote:And no I cant access any more info about the Miscellaneous used space , and there are no files related to it.
