move VM from host to another host

Post by rzmuda »

Is it possible to move a VM from one host to another host as long as the host hardware were a close match?

This has been answered several times in the past. Try Google with "Move VM" site:forums.virtualbox.org.

Yes, please do a search for more in depth answers but the short answer is that you need to move the entire folder that represents the VM. In it will be at least the *.VBOX file and the file that holds the VMs disk(s), most liekly a .VDI file.

Not being a MAC user I cannot say about the cross platform compatibility. Just COPY the folder over to the other host, then use the MACHINE -> ADD menu options form the main Vbox dialog and add it. Start it and see if it works.

.vbox files copied between different hosts will not work without changes. For the simplest example: VDI path names etc are all different on Mac vs Windows. For someone with appropriate expertise the conversion will be easy, but the OP gave very little info to draw conclusions from.
