Snapshot dialog window pauses VM for no good reason

Post by waldorfm »

Hello,

I noticed the following behavior and wonder if this is an error in the current workflow:

1. Select the VM in the VirtualBox Manager window.
2. Click the Snapshots button from the toolbar.
3. Click the Camera button.

When the dialog window opens to name the snapshot, the VM immediately pauses. The VM even remains paused when pressing the Cancel button. I think it should only pause the VM when actually creating the snapshot.

I have noticed the above in the current and previous versions: 4.2.4 and 4.2.6.

Thanks.

I think you shouldn't be creating snapshots of a running VM.

The pausing behaviour is expected behaviour, since snapshots cannot be taken online by Virtualbox.
If you think the GUI behaviour could be improved, you should direct this to the bug tracker directly and post a new ticket as "enhancement".

Once you have done so, please post back here the link or the ticket number os other users can be informed of further actions or developments on this.

I understand that a VM must freeze while a snapshot is taken. However, I see no reason that the VM should pause already while only showing the snapshot dialog to specify the snapshot name, and continues to be paused when pressing the Cancel button. I'm not sure if this was really an enhancement rather than an existing bug. I created Ticket #11409. I did not mean to give it major priority though.

I believe you will find this normal behaviour. Once the camera button has been clicked the snapshot is started and only waiting for a name. To accomplish this on a working guest it must be paused. It works the same way using the guests top menu.

When you use the menu option to pause the VM in the front most window, it pauses, but it resumes when you click the cancel button, unlike using the camera button, where the VM remains paused.

Besides I think the better action was to pause the VM once you press the OK button to perform the snapshot, but not already while showing only the dialog window to question the snapshot name.
