after update nothing works, cant switch back

Hello Users and Helpers !

I have tried to update from 4.2.4 to 4.2.6
OK, no problems, but the Guest-Extensions wont work (cant install)
remove the new version and trie to (re-)install the old (4.2.4) version
everytime one or more errors

all VB-Files deleted, cleaned the registry, remove the VM's ->moved to an usb-device

but still the same error....

"the older version of oracle virtualbox 4.2.6 cannot be removed. contac your technical support group."

the Setup-error is without any clues, error-codes
i need the VM's for education in the next weeks, and i wont make the PC back to the standart

btw PC is Win7 Home Premium

You are using unusual terminology, so first we need to establish if you are referring to the Guest Additions (which you install inside supported guest OS), or whether you mean the Extension Pack, which is a plugin for the VirtualBox application which you install on the host.

I think you mean the Extension Pack.

I'm disturbed at mention of "cleaning the registry". Doing that is probably the reason you can't uninstall the old software. What happens if you forget that and just try to install 4.2.6?

no entrys under -> control panel -> software
Cleaning the registry was the last step i tried ...

I have donwload and installed the offered update 4.2.6
all works fine, but after i download the new extension pack ... some errors ( with error-codes )

so, google and reading the hints...uninstall the update
and then all versions of VirtualBox ( without deleting the VM's )
next step...try to install the old version 4.2.4
since that point...only errors
and then i haved "cleaned" the registry
but i can't install any version of VirtualBox

Trying browsing to the "Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionsPacks" folder area and delete the entire contents of that folder. Of course VBox must not be running. Then try installating the extension pack again.

Don't use registry cleaners. They are snake oil: the registry rarely needs to be cleaned, and when it does no automated tool can do it. The only application that should remove a key from the registry is the app that put it there. Only that app knows what the key is for.
