Hey.

I have a NVIDIA 660 TI with 2GB VRAM and I would love to run Windows 7 in a Virtualbox environment on a Windows 7 machine with 24GB memory.

My problem is that I cannot get Aero affects working, I have installed the experimental Direct3D drivers and I get an error in the virtuallized Windows 7 instance that I've round out of memory, or that it has exceeded it's maximum allowed memory.
I have assigned the specific machine the maximum allowed(256MB VRAM and 8GB system ram and 4 cores). Is there anything I can do?

The amount of VRAM assigned has little to do with graphics capabilities of the VM. E.g. when using the direct3d drivers it's the host which is doing the rendering, so it's the one which needs VRAM.

The simulated VRAM in the guest is taken from host RAM, not host VRAM.

Post precise error messages please, and explain the context in which you saw it.

Right click on desktop -> Personalize -> Choose Windows 7 Aero Theme -> This happens a few seconds after -> i.imgur(dot)com/73H0l0S.png

Make sure the VM is shut down, then post the latest VM log file please. The VM log file is called "VBox.log", and can be found in the "Logs" subfolder of your VM folder. Attach it here as a .zip.

Here you go. I had to zip it because the file was apparently to big.

If this means that you have installed the Direct3D drivers instead of the wddm drivers than that is your problem.

I know the install instructions are really written poorly but what you should have done when you clicked 3D is say no and then you are presented with the wddm drivers that you should use in Vista & newer Windows.

To fix this you should remove the guest additions in the guest by selecting uninstall from the Oracle program group and reboot the guest. Then say no to the experimental 3D and select wddm when you install the guest additions again.

Note: if you installed the guest additions in safe mode you need to uninstall them in safe mode. The wddm drivers do not need to be started in safe mode to install.
