F16 networking issue

Post by mikeybikey »

Hi

I helped a friend set up VB with an F16 VM. He's running Win XP Pro 32 bit Intel. Whenever he runs the VM it works fine as long as he doesn't start a program that accesses the net. If he does access the net he gets a Windows popup box that says
Windows - System Error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network
Under Networking in the right hand pane of the VM Manager window it says
Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged Adapter, Realtel RTL8186D(P)/8111D(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ehternet NIC)
.

I should also mention that the kernel he was using got broke somehow. Before the kernel broke there was no problem. However he can run an older kernel with no trouble at all until he tries to access the net.

At this point I can only imagine reinstalling F16 from scratch but I'm not in a hurry to do that because we don't know what broke the kernel in the first place or what it has to do with VM Manager (if it even does).

Thanks very much in advance for any help,
Mike

The error message tells you everything : you got another entity (computer or VM) with the same IP as the one from your VM.
In this case the IP that was setup was the same as the host - that just won't work.

Make sure the IP is different as well as the MAC addresses.

Hi

The only other system on that network is the XP host itself. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I'm sure the guest and the host are just doing DHCP but I'll check.

Thanks for the reply,

Then there is also the DHCP server on the network, and most likely a router, etc.
Try to reach each network element first, a bit further each time, and see where it stops.
