Issue accessing Internet with NAT network

Hi,

I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.6 on Windows 7.

I've installed a CentOS 5.8 host VM with a NAT network. And, I now unable to access internet from the host.

I've already fixed one probleme by setting manually my host DNS to 10.0.2.2 (in resolv.conf). So when ping google dot com for exemple, the name resolution works but not the ping.

Can anyone see what is wrong with my configuration?

Raoul

PS: I cannot fix my problem by switching to a bridge network, as I'm allowed to have only 1 mac address on my switch port, for security reason.

Can you ping the IP of your host NIC? Can you ping the IP of the router? can ping the IP of the DNS?

Hi NoteIrak,

Yes, from the host (10.0.2.15), I can :
- ping the host NIC (10.0.2.15)
- ping the router (10.0.2.2)
- ping the DNS (10.0.2.3)

Regards,

Raoul

Then there is nothing wrong with the Virtualbox install or configuration itself.
The problem either comes from your CentOS configuration, in which case this is out of scope of this forum, or with your network security, with which nothing can be done I am afraid.

Hi NoteIrak,

In fact I had a proxy issue: the proxy configuration was well setted at the host level and at the virtualbox level, but it seems that was not necessary. My linux hosts must be configured to use the proxy.

So in case of CentOS, to enable proxy with yum, I've add the following parameter in the /etc/yum.conf file:
# The proxy server - proxy server:port number
proxy=the_proxy_full_url
# The account details for yum connections
proxy_username=yum-user
proxy_password=qwerty

So, an other question comes to my mind: what is the proxy setting for in the configuration panel of VirtualBox? I guess only for VirtualBox to check for its own update?

Regards,

Raoul

That's correct, it is for Virtualbox itself if it needs to communicate with something, but it is not related to the guests at all.
