I would reinstall VirtualBox, making sure you don't have a version mismatch between the app and its plugin.

both are the same "4.2.6-82870" is a problem with my computer, it is fine on my dads work laptop, but I can't actually use that one for class because he needs it.

Sorry, I don't think I can add much to what I've already suggested. AFAIK no one else has reported this problem.

I'm having the same problem; I upgraded to 4.2.8 and can't install the 4.2.8 extension pack. I've uninstalled and reinstalled but am still getting the same error.

FYI, I just got this to install.
I had to copy the extension pack file to C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionPacks\, then it installed successfully.

It definitely doesn't need to be copied there - that is where the installer will copy it. It is more likely that VBox simply didn't like where you were originally trying to install it from, e.g. it sometimes dislikes seeing files in root folders.

Without knowing the list of places VBox does and doesn't like, that's the one place I know it will install from. It didn't work from my downloads folder (from where I installed VBox in the first place).

OTOH, it does install from my downloads folder. All that is normally required is that the folder is accessible to the current user, though as mentioned there have been bugs known in the past related to files in root folders. Your sample size of one cannot easily be extrapolated to the general case.

I just had a the same issue and came across this post. I made the folder "ExtensionPacks" so it was C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionPacks\, then copied the Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.16-86992.vbox-extpack file into the new folder and it installed. This was on the advice that sirius gave above. This may of been because the ExtensionPacks folder was missing.
I suggest to the next person, creating the folder "ExtensionPacks" so it looks like C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionPacks\ then try to run the executable from your downloads folder. I'm sure it would work if not do as sirius suggests and copy the executable into the newly made folder and run it from there. Good luck

same deal with 4.3.18 on Win8 64bit... the trick with the ExtensionPack folder does the job
