Switching between host and guest in Windows 8

Post by Gatorb »

My host is Windows 8 OS
My keyboard does not work in VM or host once I start VM. I managed to get Windows Server 2008 running in Vbox after downloading the software from Microsoft DreamSpark. It gave me the option to save as an ISO image in a virtual disk and I was like sweet. The only problem I am having now is switching out of the guest Microsoft Server 2008. It told me to use the host key “right control” but it doesn't switch to the host.Could the wireless keyboard somehow not be allowing me to use the right control for switching host and guest. I can do everything in the VM with the mouse but can't get out to close the message boxes from Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager running on host that come up when installing Microsoft Server 2008 and they are sitting directly in the VM. I successfully changed the default right "control" to "shift" just to see if that would change between guest and host but the keyboard just doesn't seem to work

I used “Other Windows” for version for OS since it didn't have Windows Server 2008 or any server for that fact when creating the VM.

System: I used 2048 Mb for Base Memory ( I have 6.0 GB), Acceleration is using VT-x\AMD-V, nested Paging (I have an AMD E-2 1800 processor).

Display: I am using 32 MB, 3D acceleration.

Storage: I am using MooseSever.vhd ( Normal 20.00GB) on IDE Primary, IDE secondary Host Drive M: which was the virtual drive I created.

Audio: I am using Windows DirestSound for driver and ICH AC97 as controller.

Network adapter: 1: Pcnet-FAST 3 (NAT).

USB: And here is where I think my problem lies, I am using Hewlett Packer HP Wireless Keyboard[0130] and SMI Corporation USB DISK[1100].

Have you installed the guest additions (in the guest OS)? When the guest is running, click on the Devices tab and select Install guest additions. If the install does not start automatically, go to the CD drive in the VM and start it manually. Release the GA iso file from the CD drive when you are finished.

With the GAs installed you do not need to release the mouse. It will work in the vm when you are inside the vm window and in the host if you are not.
