win 7 on new mac book 3 usb drivers not found

Post by goldenbeard »

Just received a new macbook from school, with mountain lion, loaded virtualbox 4.2.6 and the extensions part aswell onto it. Put on win 7 64bit pro as guest and am having difficulty loading any usb devices as htey come with errors on both sides, I did have 2 unknown devices in my device manager under usb controllers. and I kept getting a NS_ERROR_FAILURE when I tried to attached my kigston usb pen. I added the kigston pen to the usb filter table and now I have 3 unknown devices in device manger and also get a device not recognised message when I plug in kingston usb pen. Has anyone any idea's
I'm sort of guessing that there are drivers that need to be loaded that aren't in the extension pack.

All you need to do in the host is install the extension pack, there are no additional host drivers. Then enable the USB controller in the VM settings, and add a filter matching your device. You should not need any drivers in the guest either, provided the guest has native support for that device type. In the case of USB flash drives that's called "mass storage devices" and Windows does have native support since XP days.

However: VirtualBox does not yet support USB 3.0 devices.

thanks for your reply, but I have loaded on the extension pack, infact I've loaded on the extension pack a couple of times to see if that was the issue but the issue still comes up. I have placed the the usb pen in the filter and it comes up as unknown device. I've tried the usb pen in NTFS format and Fat32, same thing. when I unplug it and plug it back in, it pops up on the host (mac side) and so I eject it and it appears for selection on the guest (win 7 side) but as an unknown device with a brief message bottom right going sorry device unrecognised. I have put it in another seperate windows machine and it pops up straight away.
