Hello,
I just downloaded the Virtual Box and got a Fedora 17 iso to use. I created the Fedora machine and loaded the iso into it, but my machine will not boot. It passes the first couple screens and then sits at a black screen indefinitely. Anyone know why this could be?

Where are the full and complete infos?

Without Hardware virtualization It can take as much as 10 minutes to get a screen you can actually see. It should load and work but really slow.
Software virtualization in VBox is all but gone.

Yeah, I've been waiting for over two hours for it to boot and it still won't. So that's not it.

You could try enabling the "IO APIC" option.

I note also that you are using a substantial fraction of the hosts available RAM, which is likely to impact performance if it works at all.

I take it this is a 32bit version of Fedora being installed?

Yes. This is a 32 bit Fedora.

As for the RAM, I went with the suggested size. Not sure why they suggest if it's too much.

By the way, the option you told me to check did nothing.

How can "they" know how much RAM your host can spare? Did they sell it to you?

Is that really necessary? I don't need you to be an ass to me, I need someone to tell me why this isn't booting.

And by the way, I made another one with less RAM, and that didn't do anything either.

Actually 768MB (512+256) in a valid number and the very least that you can use to install Fedora =>17.
The issue as far as I can tell is the missing VT-x/AMD-v which is really needed in VirtualBox these days. I have been successful installing without but it is tricky. Sometimes it hangs like what you are seeing and then sometimes it proceeds. It also depends on the install media and at times you need to install in text mode, or VNC. This makes it even more tricky because you will need to install the GUI after you have it running.

I would suggest that you try an OS that is a little easier on the install, like Linux Mint, and see if it works better. This install will work at 512MB of ram. It still will take a while to see anything though and there is no way around that. If it takes more than 10 to 15 minutes it probably will not install.

I'm going to try that. I'm downloading the iso right now, so I'll post an update once I try the install.

? It was a serious question. I suggested that you were using more RAM than your host could easily afford, you said you were told to use that amount. A strange answer which I queried the basis of.

However I still think your problem sounds like typical "IO APIC wrong" symptoms.
