Adding RAM in VirtualBox

Post by Suddha »

Hello. I am new to Oracle virtualbox.

I am using it on my computer wherein I have only 2G RAM as of now. While creating virtual disks for guest machines using virtualbox, I have seen that the disks are actually stored as files on the computer. Can I do the same for RAM? I.e., Is there any command using which I can create a 4G file on my computer and assign this 4G file as the total RAM/Memory for a certain Guest OS?

Please advice.

Thanks in advance,
Suddhasatwa

No you can't.
If you can, it is totally out of scope of this forum and only for third party tools.

Thanks for the information above.

In that case, the only solution I have is to increase the RAM of my computer if I would like to run multiple virtual/guest hosts in my machine. Please correct me if otherwise.

Thanks,

That is correct. 2GB is really limited RAM and depending on what you want to go for, I would aim for 8 GB (personally) or more (only if you know you need it)

VirtualBox does not simulate CPU or RAM. You must assign actual CPU time (or cores) and actual RAM to the simulated PC.

The amount of RAM you need depends on the specific guest OSs, which AFAIK you have not mentioned. E.g. 512MB is fine for XP.
