Hi,
I did a VDI to VMDK convertion of a XP Guest OS but when I start it from VBox it freeze.
Safe-boot show some drivers loading but then get black screen (the time just before XP GUI appear I think).
Used command for convertion : VBoxManage.exe clonehd "XP.vdi" "XP.vmdk" --format VMDK --variant Standard
No active snapshot.
regards.

Re: XP Guest boot freeze after VDI to VMDK convertion
Where did this VM come from, and why did you convert to VMDK?
In any case, the hard disk container format makes absolutely no difference to the VM. All that matters is the VM hardware and the drivers installed in the guest. If you have a problem then it has nothing to do with the format conversion.
A black screen on boot usually means that the IO APIC selection is set the wrong way, i.e. not matching the HAL installed on this XP.

I/O APIC setting that's it !
And to answer your question I want to work with VMDK instead of VDI because I may have to use VBox and/or VMWare in near future so I am starting to convert all my VDI into VMDK to avoid having to convert VDI into VMDK multiple time.
Thank you

Re: XP Guest boot freeze after VDI to VMDK convertion
Remember that the vmdk file format is supported and *not* vmware necessarily. If you install the guest additions, I can bet that it will not make vmware happy and vice versa. And to answer your question I want to work with VMDK instead of VDI because I may have to use VBox and/or VMWare in near future so I am starting to convert all my VDI into VMDK to avoid having to convert VDI into VMDK multiple time.

Re: XP Guest boot freeze after VDI to VMDK convertion
There may be issues with XP activation too when moving between the two VM platforms.

Good remark I also have Vista 32/64, Seven 32/64 (as a Developper I use them all to test my apps).mpack wrote:There may be issues with XP activation too when moving between the two VM platforms.
