random lockups with USB dvd-rw drive -- Fedora 18

Post by yug »

I have not been able to locate the cause of lockups of both virtual machine and VB Manager other than an external USB DVD-RW Drive being mounted in the VM. It does not always happen and I have been able to write and access DVDs with Dolphin, K3b, MC etc.. When it does happen I have had to kill all virtualbox processes on Windows 7 host or sometimes just the VM.

I should add that I have been running kernel 3.6.11-3.fc18.x86_64, I just downloaded 3.7.1-2 kernel. If guest additions modules build I'll see if it makes a difference.

Fedora bug. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=892373

Delete the empty file as indicated in the bug report and run # /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup.

Thanks, good call.

So I guess I can rule out the kernel because I am still getting system freezes.

When it locks up I have to kill it from Windows so not much is logged.

These are the last messages before it froze.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for your freeze. I know burning images to a CD/DVD drive that is mounted on the host from the guest works, but I have never tried to do so on a USB burner. I suspect that is where the issue really resides. Timing is critical on VBox USB.

Only place you can hopefully get help with this is bugtracker
It would also help if you can post the ticket number here so other can see the progress, add information, or see the final results.

The funny thing about it is burning works fine I would think that if it was a timing issue that would fail.

Anyway, I'll wait until Fedora 18 is released and see if the problem persists before filing a bug.
