Sorry I meant to say that losing the clipboard paste is why I didn't include the full output produced by the manual install attempt.
Sorry,

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
That's because you have a botched GA install.
I would try the install (manually as su/sudo) with uninstall at the end of the statement to remove them and then install again. Make sure that you select the right one for your guest bit. Also a minimum of log off and back in before the GAs will work and may need a reboot, especially with all the work you have done trying to get them installed.

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi Perry
Sorry I haven't got back to you. I didn't notice that you had posted back. My mistake sorry.
Anyway I did like you suggested by running /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.2.6/uninstall.sh and got the same x11config.sh (I think) error. But poking around I noticed that /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.2.4/ still existed and had some not all stuff in it. So I deleted that and rebooted, unmounted GA.iso and then did Install Guest Additions and it ran to completion without reporting any errors. So far the moment at least things look good. If I run into anything else I'll get back.
Thanks very much for all your help and your patience.
Best regards,
Mike
