no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
I'm running a Fedora 16 guest on a Windows 7 host on amd64. I upgraded to VB 4.2.6 along with a new Extensions pack but if I look in the VirtualBox install folder my VBoxGuestAdditions iso has not been updated despite the fact after the first boot after the upgrade to 4.2.6 I got a balloon saying I could upgrade my guest additions. (I haven't been able to get the balloon back.)
I thought the guest additions were included in the VB iso so I assumed that the guest addition iso would be updated in the VirtualBox folder but it hasn't. I haven't been able to find a way to download just the guest additions iso. The version I'm running is 4.2.4 r81684 AFAICT.
I let VB do the upgrade to 4.2.6 and the new extensions pack.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

While the guest is running click the device tab and then click install guest additions.

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi Perry
Thanks for the reply. If I try Devices > Install Guest Additions from the F16 window I get:
Clicking 'Force Unmount' doesn't fix it. If I try again I get the same thing.
If I try this:
in the F16 window it takes me to Program Files > Oracle > VirtualBox and there is a 'VBoxGuestAdditions' "Disc Image File" whose date is prior to the upgrade. The other thing that is dated prior to the upgrade is the folder 'sdk'. Everything else in that folder was updated by the upgrade.
However if I log into the guest and look at /media I see /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870/ with the following files (taken from Emacs dired):
So I am really confused ...
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Close the guest (shut down not saved state).
Go to the storage section of the guest settings and click on the CD/DVD.
Look to the right and you will see a CD/DVD icon.
Click and then select remove disk from virtual drive.
Start the guest and click on the device -> install guest additions.

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
I did what I thought you said to do. Under F16 > Storage > Controller:IDE (where my real CD/DVD drive was "attached") all I could find was "Remove attachment" so I did that but now when I go back and highlight Controller:IDE everything for adding a drive is greyed out.
I'm sorry about this. What did I do wrong? What should I do?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

You can not change setting if the guest is not shut down (not saved state)
See screen shot.

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
I must be missing something really fundamental. I have tried clicking the white cross in the red box at the upper right hand corner and then "send the shutdown signal" which never amounts to anything and also "power off the machine" (which works) and I still get exactly what's in your screen shot. If I use the "power button" (upper righthand corner) in F16 itself and then "shutdown" I get exactly what's in your screenshot again. Storage shows "Empty" and "Remove disk from virtual drive" is greyed out just like in your screenshot. If I do either the "power off the machine" from the guest window or "shutdown" from F16 itself and then try to do "Install guest additions" I get the same error I originally wrote about. I know I'm missing something simple. Any idea what?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
FWIW I seem to have to be logged in for "Install Guest Additions" to even respond and since it''s F16 I can't log in as root if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Start the guest and then click on the devices tab at the top and select install guest additions.
This mounts the guest additions ISO to the guests virtual CD which should auto-start if enabled. If not the use the guests file manager to go to the cd and run manually.
Hopefully you will have an easier time with the necessary Linux packages that are needed to install the guest additions.
Here is a link for that. Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions

You log in as su/sudo after you logged in as yourself. (In a terminal)mikeybikey wrote:Hi

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
Thanks for the howto link. I tried to follow the instructions there. The packages were all already there and the GA iso was already mounted as /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870 as I wrote in one of my original posts. I run sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run and I get an error about no /usr/lib64/VBoxGuestAdditions/X11config.sh script. It says I might have to restart to enable so I do and rerun and I get the same thing. The directory is there but it's empty. The complaint comes from /etc/init.d/vboxadd-x11 line 475 which indeed tries to run the non-existent script. Surely this is a GA problem?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

If it were a problem with the GAs I would have heard about it before now. Is the Fedora guest 64-bit or 32-bit?

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
I didn't mean to offend. It was a question? Sorry I should have said. It's amd64.
Just to make sure I tried Install Guest Additions again and I still get the warning about not being able to mount the GA file on Windows 7.
Cheers,
Mike

Ok not able to mount on Windows 7.
You do know that the guest additions are installed in the guest right?

Re: no new guest additions after upgrade to 4.2.6
Hi
Aye my previously 2nd last message was all done as root inside in the guest. Definitely Linux.
BTW since I tried to install the GA "manually" I seem to have lost the ability to paste from the Windows clipboard.
Cheers,
Mike
