It looks like you have not installed the Extension Pack, needed for USB2 support.

While the guest is shut down (not saved state) enable the USB2 (see your screen shot)
Next for the guest to be able to use the device it must first be un-mounted from the Mac host.

I would think you should see it in the file manager as a USB device. If not then you probably need to mount it. Is the Ubuntu guest using a desktop or just CLI (text)?

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

This is saying that you have created a filter for the device but it is not active (mounted)

Remember I said that you first had to release it from the host, and I didn't say anything about a filter. You should release the filter (with the guest shut down) and then start the guest. Release the device from the host and then use the devices tab to select the USB device. This should allow it to mount.

I am not an avid Mac user so I can only tell you what I have heard. The other Mac users say they had to release it. I can only assume they mean unmount.
