Intel PRO 10/100 8255x support

Post by Sledge93 »

Hello All!
I'm new here and just installed VirtualBox for Mac on my Macbook Pro 17 because my imbedded system doesn't boot on Parallels, yet it does on VB. My imbedded system has NIC drivers for Intel Pro 10/100 8255x cards, 3c509 (ISA), SMC-8432/21041 and DEC/i21143 PCI cards. I tried the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (825490EM) drivers and my code recognizes it but it doesn't work.

Maybe I'm missing something in the configuration.

Any help on this issue. This is important.

Thank you for your time,

Ted

You're not missing anything. The Intel E1000 chips are substantially different from the earlier PRO/100(B). The choices in VirtualBox are Intel E1000, AMD PCnet, and VirtIO. That selection happens to cover 99.99% of users' needs.

If you require something else, you can either contract Oracle to do it for you or develop the emulation yourself. Neither is cheap/easy as Ethernet controller emulation is a somewhat complex subject. Alternatively you can find/write a driver for one of the emulated NIC models for your guest OS (less work, much less generic solution).

FWIW, I think the SMC and DEC in your list are the same thing, both use the DEC 'Tulip' 21xxx Ethernet controller.
