Slow Shared Folder

Transfers to my shared folder are about 10x slower than to the local drive. Running VBOX 4.26 on Win7 64-bit host and guest is Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit running 4.26 guest addtions. Any clue how to fix this or must I use SMB for it to operate normally?
