Enlarge the VDI size

Post by HuaMin »

Hi,
When cloning the VM, can I have a bigger VDI size for the new VM?

Thanks. But I can't find out the clear steps to enlarge the new VDI file after clone.

Did you tick the "Increase partition size" box before proceeding to create the clone ?

I don't know where this option is during the clone.

Right there on the CloneVDI dialog box - a checkbox which says "Increase partition size".

FrodoHobbits gave you a link above, you obviously have not followed it. CloneVDI is a tool which existed long before the VM cloning feature was added to the GUI. It can clone hard disk images, and do other things while doing so, such as compact them and/or increase their logical size.

The built in VM cloning feature does not offer to resize disks while cloning.

I am having a similar problem. I used the CloneVDI tool, it make the size bigger, yet in my linux it still says its only using the same amount as the original vdi was using even though it is removed from VirtualBox. Its getting to be a little confusing.

As explained in the release notes that come with the software: CloneVDI cannot resize Linux partitions, so you need to run gparted after CloneVDI has resized the disk. Details in the release notes.

mpack, thank you so much for such a useful tool, and your support of it. Do you have some mechanism whereby I can make a financial donation by way of thanks and to assist is its future development?

Thanks for the thought, but at the moment I'm not looking for financial contributions. That might get me into trouble with the tax man. I think the majority of the development is already done, but if obvious gaps appear then I'll fill them. I'm a user myself, so I don't need additional incentive, just additional free time...

HDD clonein WIN98 SE VM guest in linux mint 14 host ?

Post by herakles »

Hi Dear Mpack !

I run a Windows 98 SE VM on a Linux Mint 14 Cinammon : my virtual hdd in Win 98 SE is becoming too " small " ( 2 GB! ) What's the best solution : increase it's size or clone it to a larger one ? I already tried to attach a new VDI ti my Win 98 SE VM but the VM doesn't see it at all ! :(

Thanks in advance n cheers form Mauritius..

You can easily increase the disk size using CloneVDI (FAT32 is a supported guest filesystem).

Attaching a new hard disk to a Win98SE machine should have worked too, I imagine it failed because you didn't know how to format the drive with a Win98 filesystem (ie. FAT32). It's been a while since I did that for a Win9x machine, but Googling did turn up these instructions.

I suggest backing up your VM folder before you do anything rash to it.
