Can ping between VM's but not Host

Post by Spicecube914 »

Hey guys. Bare with me, as I am new to the whole VM scene so I will do my best to explain my situation...

I have 3 VM's running on a Win7 x64 host, the first VM is running Server 2008 R2, and the other two are running WinXP Pro. I have Server 2008 setup as a domain controller and a DHCP server for the other two VM's. All 3 are able to ping each other by hostname or IP but none of the 3 can ping the host machine and therefore cannot connect to the internet. The network settings for all 3 are set for Internal Network, if I set them as NAT they can get out to the internet but they can no longer connect with each other.

Is it possible to set up a virtual domain with the VM's but still allow them to all use an outside internet connection? I appreciate the help. Insert smiley face here

That is how it should work. Internal emulates a hub/switch. If you had three physical machines connected to a physical switch, that is exactly how it would work. The way to give the domain Internet access is exactly the same for vms as for physical machines.
Set up a router (in a virtual machine) which has one NIC connected to the physical network and one which is in the internal network. You can use Windows Server or a Linux appliance like pfSense as your router. The configuration is exactly the same as with a physical network (and is a Windows matter, not a VirtualBox matter).

Take a look at this excellent tutorial, Using PFsense for the router doesn't eat up much in the way of resources.

That....makes perfect sense. I apparently never looked at it like it was its own separate LAN that needs its own external connection.

I read through that tutorial and got it all up and running. Thanks a lot guys.
