I have tried every procedure I can find but can't get any to work. I ran the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run rpm. It completed ok so I rebooted. Then I added c:\ to the shared folders under Machine/Settings/Shared folders.
Here is what is in most procedures along with the error message.
Does anyone know what is going on?
[root@eddy-lnx cdrom]# ls /media/sf_*
ls: cannot access /media/sf_*: No such file or directory
[root@eddy-lnx cdrom]# cd /media
[root@eddy-lnx media]# ls
VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870
[root@eddy-lnx media]# mount -t vboxsf /mnt/shared/C_DRIVE /mnt/shared/
/sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: Protocol error

Re: Using shared folders on CentOS
Why would you ever share a full Windows drive to a Linux guest? Most of the drive is useless to it.
The error is telling you that either the share name is not correct, not formatted properly, or not accessible.
I would remove it and start over but select a single folder to begin with. You also have at your disposal a guide called the VirtualBox users manual that describes this. See Chapter 4.3 Shared folders

Re: Using shared folders on CentOS
The problem was not that I was using c:\, it was because I misunderstood the mount syntax. I simply had to use C_DRIVE as the sharename whereas I used the full path for the sharename.

How can you say something so irresponsible? You have no idea how I or others work or our needs. Please work on your internet edict.

Re: Using shared folders on CentOS
You came back after two weeks to add that?
You were asked a fair question, you might try answering it. The question itself carried the implied and perfectly valid message that sharing your entire hard drive is a risky thing to do, a risk which seems nonsensical when you are sharing with a Linux PC: which for most people has no earthly use for all the applications and DLLs in the Windows folder. In fact "irresponsible" might be a legitimate accusation to hurl at someone who fails to highlight that risk for the benefit of inexperienced users.
It also IMHO wouldn't go amiss if you showed a tiny bit of gratitude for the free software and free tech support you receive here.
