help with configuring ipfire router through virtual box
Hey,
What's the reason I can't ping anything behind my ipfire router from the commandline.
I can ping my green and orange interface but I can't ping google for example.
IPfire is running on a virtual machine that's a laptop. I have a red, orange and green zone.
This are my settings:
Green 10.0.0.1
Subnetmask 255.128.0.0
Orange 172.16.0.1
Subnetmask 255.255.0.0
RED DHCP
DHCP: DNS 10.0.1.1
Start 10.0.1.10
END 10.0.1.90
and happy new year!
My Red is DHCP and has this ip: 169.254.215.99 subnetmask 255.255.0.0 It's a virtual box Netwerk Bridge Adapter...
I have set up a network bridge adapter in virtual box and i'm not working wireless,
I have a cable these are the nics I can choose:
- Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini Card
- Realtek PCIe GBE Familly Controller (I guess this is the nic I need)
- Microsoft Virtual WIFI mini port adapter

Your issue is here, you are not getting an IP from your DHCPthe original stinger wrote:My Red is DHCP and has this ip: 169.254.215.99 subnetmask 255.255.0.0

Re: help with configuring ipfire router through virtual box
You will need to configure your network and/or your DHCP properly so it works. Might also be your ifpire box...

Ok, but I realy don't see what's wrong. On my host I can access the web (windows 7 64 bit) everything works fine.
On the ipfire all should be fine to see above information, this is the DHCP info on my ipfire:
DNS 10.0.1.1 (I just made that one up, or should I use a free dns like 8.8.8.
End 10.0.1.90
Start 10.0.1.10
this is the info on my windows 7 host:

Re: help with configuring ipfire router through virtual box
If you configured this in your ipfire VM, this would be the DHCP config for the clients. But the ipfire VM itself will still need a proper IP address. This configuration will not be any different from a real machine.the original stinger wrote:DNS 10.0.1.1 (I just made that one up, or should I use a free dns like 8.8.8.

Re: help with configuring ipfire router through virtual box
I would recomand seeking local support for that - this can get quite complicated, and is not related to Virtualbox.

I really need to find it by myself for a better understanding. Hopefully somebody will be able to explain the steps that have to been done. Thx anyway.

Re: help with configuring ipfire router through virtual box
That is fine, but this is not the place to get that help. You have a network problem which is not directly associated with VirtualBox. The fact that you are using VirtualBox does not automatically make any problem you strike a VirtualBox Problem. If you set up the VirtualBox network settings correctly, any other network problems are simply network problems.the original stinger wrote:I really need to find it by myself for a better understanding. In your original post, your router was receiving an APIPA (169.254.0.0/16) address. This usually means that the NIC is configured to get an IP from DHCP but failed. Have you tried manually setting the network config so that it has a valid IP for this network? It should be in the same IP subnet and have the same default gateway as the host machine NIC which gets its config from DHCP.
How you configure ipfire is beyond the scope of this forum.
