Also FYI and for the record, I moved one of my VMware Centos 6 64-bit guests to VBox, and it works, and also doesn't have the logout looping problem. Also I was able to install VBOx additions.

For the record, I figured out how to eliminate the looping at shutdown. It was actually pretty simple.

What I did was to :

- Remove the VMDKs from the guest
- use Wordpad to edit the base VMDK files, changing the adapter type from "lsilogic" or "buslogic" to "ide".
- add the VMDKs back under the IDE controller

After that, the Centos 4.8 guests shutdown (and reboot) cleanly.
