Moving files between guest & Host

Post by dave1510 »

Hi,
I am new to this forum, so hope this is in the right section!

I have just started using Virtual Machine version 4.2.4 (although I have the 4.2.6 downloaded but not installed.

I am guesting XP Pro, on a Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit host, and it's working OK... but for 2 functions that I can't seem to get to work as I expected.

They are Drag & Drop (bi directional) & Shared clipboard (bi directional) - (I assume that means I can drag & drop from XP to 7 and vice versa)

This is not happening, and I'm at a loss to understand why. Also if I select "Copy" on the guest, and go to the ost, the Paste option is greyed out.

It's probably something that I haven't done  , but I'd like to be able to enable it please.

Can anyone enlighten me please? - because if I need to install another part (I installed defaults from the download of 4.2.4) I could include this when installing 4.2.6 - or maybe 4.2.6 fixes the issue?

Anyway - I look forward to the replies

Thanks
H.Z.

Is the Virtualbox Guest Additions installed on your guest?

Even with the additions installed, copy/paste only work for text and drag & drop only works for Linux guests (known limitation).
Therefore, it wouldn't work for your setup.

They don't install automatically, so if you don't know, they probably are not.

When the vm is running, click on the Devices tab at the top of the vm window and select "Install Guest Additions" then follow the prompts. This installs the additions into the OS in the guest to make it work better in a virtual machine.

Like any other program installed in a Windows OS it will show up in the installed programs. You should also see an icon in the taskbar of the guest OS.

Hi,
Thanks,
Yes - well it's now installed, and behaving just as you all have said - text copies, but nothing else.

Shame about the limitations, but - there we are
