I'm currently locked out of my administrative account, while password changes are accepted in the root they don't go through on the login screen. Because of this, and every fix I try failing I want to reinstall ubuntu. The problem is I cannot seem to do it without being in control of the admin account. Is there any way I can do this? I'm not very great at tech things and installed the VM last year, I let it sit and my password stopped working and now things are just not going to well for me. Any advice or walk through would be amazing, for the time being I am going to play around and see what I can do on my own, although I am worried about losing my 40 gb allocated memory and 1 gb allocated ram forever if I screw up. Hence my presence on the board.
Thanks

Not to worry. The only ting that you would loose is the guest that does not work properly now anyway, plus you time which I imagine is to for learning.I am worried about losing my 40 gb allocated memory and 1 gb allocated ram forever if I screw up.
There is a way to recover but it has nothing to do with VirtualBox. Each major distro has a forum and they should be able to tell you how to recover/replace the administrator password. he Ubuntu forum is here. http://ubuntuforums.org/

Re: Re-installation of Ubuntu 11.1
I've posted, and tried their methods. I took some videos of the log on process (one day rule), it accepts my password for a second, goes to a new screen that changes each time, and kicks me out. I've been trying for 4 days through the guest, root, and recovery modes. Hence why I am asking how to reinstall.
My guest works fine, it is my main admin account which won't log in: I need this and cannot do anything worthwhile on my guest account at the moment. Are you sure that I won't lose that space? What my plan of action would be if this is the case is: uninstall virtual box, reinstall, reboot ubuntu, enjoy. Although I allocated the space in a way (if I recall correctly) where if I uninstall it is still allocated or something along those lines, which is why I would really prefer to just reinstall my distro, which the Ubuntu people sent me here for.

Re: Re-installation of Ubuntu 11.1
VirtualBox has nothing to do with the guest or its passwords. Reinstalling VirtualBox would be a test in futility.
So if I get this right you asked the Ubuntu people how to recover the administrators password and they could not or would not tell you how, or what they told you does not work?
Send me a PM with the exact steps they told you and I will see what I can do to help. Also post the link to the topic where you were getting help in the PM.
