Hi,
I have Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest on Win7 with the latest Vbox version. Shutting down the guest took long and had not finished when the host shut down (my mistake... I forced it because in a hurry)..
Now when I restarted the host, and VBox says the guest is not available.
error message goes something like:

Runtime error opening 'C:\Users\...\VirtualBox VMs\Ubuntu\Ubuntu.vbox' for reading: -102 (File not found.).
D:\tinderbox\win-4.2\src\VBox\Main\src-server\MachineImpl.cpp[724] (long __thiscall Machine::registeredInit(void)).
Resultaat Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Machine
Interface: IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858}

What are the chances I can get it back to work? How do I go about?

cheers

Look in the folder that has the guest and see if there is a *.vbox-prev file. If so (make a backup of it) and rename it to remove the -prev.

That did the trick!
I was fearing for some intricate programmer's solution, but this went way smoother than expected.
If everything works fine, I assume I can get rid of the backed-up file, right?
Thanks a lot... saved me a lot of headache!

Yes the backup should no longer be needed. BUT, I suggest that you occasionally backup the *.vbox file on this and all guests. They are small in size and as you see helpful if something like this happens.
