Automatically Repositioning within the Window

Post by omgomgwtfbbq »

Hello!

I have what I believe should be a simple question, but I've spent a few hours looking for a solution with no luck. I generally run 20+ virtualboxes (Ubuntu 12.04 Server with LXDE) simultaneously on a Windows 7 host. The boxes run scientific applications each of which require their own virtual machine. Managing all of these can be very tedious, so I'm trying to get as much automated as possible. Probably the most tedious task of all is simply resizing and repositioning each of the windows every time each guest is booted. The reason for this is that all I care about in those guest windows is a progress bar and an indication of time remaining to project completion. More specifically, the only visual element that I need from the guest is in a pre-determined 382x32 box.

I've managed to find a tool that will automatically resize each of the virtualbox windows and even put it at a predetermined location on my host's third monitor. It's a simple tool called Sizer.

But there's one thing it doesn't do, and I'm hoping that someone knows a way that this could be accomplished... whether using the Virtualbox software, something in the guest OS, or perhaps a separate utility altogether.

All I want is a utility that will automatically scroll the guest OS inside the virtualbox to a specific location so that it automatically focuses on that progress bar and time remaining.

Here is a screenshot to help give a better idea of what I am trying to accomplish:

(Okay, I was going to post a screen cap, but apparently I have to be a member for a day to do that. I'll post it tomorrow in this thread if a solution hasn't been found yet.)

I want to be able to click a button and have virtualbox focus on that information. If I were just doing this with one box, that would be one thing. But as I said, with 20, it gets to be very tedious and time consuming. Also, as I plan to add more processors to this system in the future, that number is going to go up.

Thank you in advance for any help that anyone can provide!

What you ask is indeed very very specific. I never heard or seen a tool doing such thing.

On the other hand, you can easily hook to a window using some basic C++ code and send keyboard input, having done it myself - a while ago tho.
Maybe you could try to hook to the virtualbox window and see if you can call something in there or send some input that would work?

I hope someone else has an easier solution tho :)
