USB Fax/Modem problems

Post by R4+Z »

Total newbie to all of this, so my first question is whether what I want to do is possible and then if it could be I can add more specifics later.

I have a windows 8 host system. The latest VM (only downloaded it yesterday) and I am running an XP guest system.

I have it all up and running and the USB Fax/modem works with a windows application. However some of the software I run, runs in a dos window and the USB modem doesn't work. Is it possible to get this working or am I expecting too much?

Thanks in advance

"doesn't work" is not diagnostic.

DOS programs typically expect a dialup modem connected to a serial port, so if your modem doesn't provide an AT command driven serial port interface then I would not expect a DOS app to see it.

Being more descriptive, the comms program I am useing reports "Com port trouble"

I have read that it is possible to get Dos USB drivers. I suppose the question is are these likely to work in a virtual environment?

Edited to add that yes it is assigned as a com port (I'm using Com2)

I take it that's a paraphrased translation. A useful error message would indicate what the trouble was, e.g. that COMx doesn't exist. In that case you would check your VM configuration to ensure that it does exist.

I'm sure they would work well - with any applications that expect to see a USB device (of which there must be precious few for DOS). I would not expect USB drivers to help a DOS serial comms application.

No paraphrasing that is the exact report. I've tried running a terminal program (Procom plus) and I simply get no response at all!

I suspect the dos program is looking for the serial connection but as there is nothing to make the USB device act as if it is a serial device in DOS it is that that is the problem. Especially as the modem works OK with a windows based program.
