can't enable USB 2.0 support

Hi I'm running 64 bit Fedora 16 on a 64 Windows 7 machine with AMD hardware virtualization support. From what I can tell I have virtualbox, the extension pack, guest additions and F16 installed correctly. Everything works fine except that under Settings > USB the box to enable USB 2.0 is greyed out and I can't check the box. I have filters for all my host USB devices listed in the USB list of devices. The guest additions works correctly (seamless mode, etc.) and it seems like all the functionality the extension pack brings works except for being able to enable USB 2.0.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Did you add your user name to the vboxusers group?
A minimum of log out and back in before permission changes take effect. Also I would strongly advise to *NOT* create filters. Select the one/s you need from the devices tab -> USB Devices tab when needed.

Hi
Actually shared folders don't seem to work either. How do I add my username to the vboxusersgroup and is that on the Linux guest? I already shutdown and restarted a couple of times since I reinstalled the extension pack.
BTW why do you not recommend using USB filters?
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Mike

In F16 I only seem to have my own group and one called vboxsf.

Sorry I didn't notice you were on a Windows host. Forget everything I said since it only applies to a Linux host. Windows hosts and USB are really tricky. The best way is to not use a filter at all, unplug the device before you start the guest and insert it after. Other than that you need to find out what is conflicting with the VBox USB driver. Someone that deals with Windows more often than I do these days will need to give you more input if this does not work, or you need more help.
Moving to Windows host.

I've added vboxusersgroup to the list of groups but using the users and groups gui I can't figure out how to add my username to the group. Sorry but can you tell me how?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I added vboxusers group to Windows and shutdown and restarted everything and still no USB 2.0 or shared folders.

Please zip up a log file for an affected VM, and post it here as an attachment. The VM log file is called "VBox.log", and can be found in the "Logs" subfolder of your VM folder.

Nothing stands out in the log. How about a screenshot showing the grayed out USB 2.0 checkbox? (png format is ideal).

Hi
You aren't gonna believe this but for one moment it allowed me to check the enable 2.0 button however that is now greyed out again and so I can't disable it or the 1.1 checkbox either.
Nonetheless I've attached a png screenshot.
As for the issue of shared folders I now have shared folders but have a problem with it that I will post about in another post since that is a guest additions issue.
I'm still very interested to know how to enable/disable USB 1.1/2.0 at any time as in what the hell is going on

.
Best,
Mike

Well, at the moment the dialog is looking like it normally would when the VM is running or suspended (i.e. not shut down, which is the only time you can change the setting).

Yes you are right. If I shut the VM down I can change the settings via the manager. I'm sorry if I missed this in the user guide in which case I apologise for wasting everybody's time.
But thanks very much for the help. I'd been trying to figure it out for three days.
Thanks again.
Best,
Mike

Most PCs (virtual or not) have a distaste for major surgery to their innards while powered up. Come to think of it, humans don't much care for it either...
It was something I looked for in the log, but evidently you shut down the VM in order to grab the log, hence I didn't find what I looked for. And this is of course why the checkbox was enabled right after.
