Messed up snapshots and stuff

I do not know how this all happened. I think it occurred after an upgrade. See the file "Windows 7 VDI in virtual media manager.png".
The location of the file "Windows 7 Ultimate.vdi" is /Users/[ME]/Library/VirtualBox/HardDisks/Windows 7 Ultimate.vdi. It is listed as a "Normal" type and it is not attached.
The location of the file "{5fe6c921-e290-4f24-9186-a9b6b7c55090}.vdi" is /Users/[ME]/Library/VirtualBox/Machines/Windows 7/Snapshots/{5fe6c921-e290-4f24-9186-a9b6b7c55090}.vdi. It is listed as a "Differencing" type and it is attached to my VM. The contents of the older "Windows 7.xml", which listed the snapshots, is

This happened before that and that thing is different. What time are you asking if I made a backup of VirtualBox.xml?

Well, this is quite strange...

You have a .vbox file, i.e. a v4 settings file, but it has a blank media registry - something you don't often see. The only way I can think of for that to happen is if you created a new VM, chose "Use existing disk", and browsed to a disk already owned by another VM. Furthermore the other VM would have to be a legacy (v3) VM which relies on the old global media registry in VirtualBox.xml. If you wanted to really mess things up the original VM would have to be using snapshots.

This did not happen because of an upgrade. New VMs are only ever created manually. If VirtualBox v4 sees a v3 VM then it treats it as v3 would have - there is no automatic conversion.

I see that you still have the equivalent .xml file, so this mishap must have been recent. I think we need to know what you did, or what you were trying to do.


How to repair... Well, the entire snapshot chain is presumably still in the global media registry (in VirtualBox.xml), so it should be possible to mount the most recent snapshot in a VM (do NOT make the noob mistake of mounting the base VDI) - and don't run the new VM. It should then be possible to clone the dummy VM (full clone), to get a v4 VM which is doesn't use snapshots, and doesn't need the global media registry. After testing you can delete the old VM. I would clone any VM that uses the old format (hence creating new VMs), and once that is done and nobody is relying on the global media registry I would delete VirtualBox.xml so that VBox creates a new one in the new format.
