Well, I can see why resizing the disk to 30720MB (30GB) would fail: the disk is already 476941MB (~ 466GB), and VirtualBox does not support shrinking disks.

What partitions are on this drive? Since it's a Win7 guest you should be able to run DiskPart from inside the VM, and resize the main partition to any size you want, though I would suggest something conservative, like 64GB.

Hi mpack,

Thanks for this. Sorry for delayed response - tis the silly season down under and free time is precious right now.

Will expand the partition and go from there.

Out of curiosity, so I don't run into the same problem later, was this an error on my part in adding the .vdi file to an new vm, or is it something within the .vdi file that thinks it has all of the disk to play with and was created when I ran the disk2vhd program?

Enjoy the season activities!

Regards
Colin

No, the problem had nothing to do with VHD vs VDI. You seem perhaps to have been suffering a mix of path and case sensitivity problems, compounded by the fact that the logical disk size was already larger than the new size you were trying to set.

However, VHD as a format has known reliability issues, so I'm glad you switched to VDI, and also glad that you tidied up the folder structure (i.e. moved the loose VDI into the VM folder).
